What this kind of project involves
New floors change a house more than almost any other single project, and they reward patience. Most problems with a floor trace back to what is under it: a dip in the subfloor, moisture in a slab, or boards laid before they had settled to the room.
A typical project replaces worn carpet or tired laminate through the main living areas with one continuous floor, then fits new baseboards so the edges are as clean as the middle.
What people usually want from it
- One continuous floorThe same surface through the main rooms, with thresholds only where the material has to change.
- The right materialWood where it will be loved, tile where it will get wet, vinyl plank where it needs to be tough.
- Quiet and flatNo squeaks, no hollow spots, and no lip at the doorways.
The scope, stage by stage
- Clear and removeFurniture moved, old flooring and baseboards removed.
- Prepare the baseSubfloor checked, flattened and fixed; moisture tested on concrete.
- AcclimatiseWood left in the rooms to settle before it is laid.
- InstallLaid to a planned layout, with transitions at doorways and stairs.
- Trim and finishNew baseboards and shoe moulding, filled and painted, then the walk-through.
One decision to make early
Decide which rooms the floor will run through before choosing the material, because the busiest room usually decides what will work everywhere else.
